This ultra-simple recipe will delight all food lovers. The main idea is to draw inspiration from the Orloff roast recipe and replace the slices of pork roast with squash, a seasonal vegetable that becomes very pleasant in taste once grilled.
Cut a medium-sized butternut squash into thick slices about 1 cm thick. Ideally, the slices should have a diameter similar to that of bacon slices.
On a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, place the butternut slices. Drizzle the butternut slices with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper, along with a few pinches of dried herbs. Note: keep the trimmings for a delicious soup in the evening.
Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 15 minutes at 180°C in a convection setting. While it is baking, prepare the cheese. You can use any melting cheese you prefer, according to personal taste.
If it is necessary to cut the cheese into small slices, it will be easier to use a melting cheese where you just need to remove the rind (if it is in slices).
After 15 minutes of cooking, switch the oven to the broil setting with the rack positioned closest to the heating element (180°C). Let it broil for 15 minutes until a light crust forms on the surface of the butternut slices.
After 15 minutes of cooking, take one or more oven-safe dishes and alternately layer a slice of: cheese, bacon, cheese, butternut, etc. Repeat the layering process with the different ingredients until the dish is completely filled.
Finally, place in the oven, still on the broil setting at 180°C. Now just wait. Once cooked, it can be enjoyed right away with a little white wine and either mashed potatoes or ham.
